About Philip

I am a UK-qualified teacher who has been hosting and entertaining young people and adults for many years. I have taught English (ESL), Business Studies and Computer Studies at various levels in secondary schools and college since 2001. My wife and I understand the importance of caring for our guests by involving them in our lives. This often takes the form of playing tennis, cards and video games (Wii, PS3), shopping, walking, swimming, cycling, introducing our friends and enjoying good food. In addition we always insist on communications in English!

In September 2013 we spent a year living and teaching in a rural part of Ghana and thoroughly enjoyed being with people who were different to us. However, we also discovered how difficult it can be to integrate into a foreign culture. On our return we determined to make a positive difference in the lives of those foreign to UK culture and in particular language-learning. We have been running weekly classes for non-native-English speakers since June 2015 and hosting young people in our house for many years. We have run numerous church-based youthclubs and still do so. We are active members of a thriving church and help run a weekly youth group.

About the Local Area

Once a small fishing port, Lowestoft is now a visitor destination to, Love, Shop, Stay, Eat and Play.

The town is set on a backdrop of an award winning beach and The Broads National Park. The Gulliver wind turbine stands proud over the town, whilst those wanting a glimpse at times gone by can visit the heritage vessels on the South pier.

A friendly welcome awaits shoppers with over 40 National retailers along with small independent shops and services. Indulgent food will tempt the taste buds from afternoon tea, restaurants serving the best local produce, including traditional seaside fish and chips.

No visit to Lowestoft is complete without visiting the seafront to enjoy the golden sandy beach and interactive fountains. With Lowestoft being Britain’s most Easterly point it’s the perfect opportunity to watch the day wake up.

The town was the birth place of the composer Benjamin Britten who was inspired by the Suffolk coastline. The cultural offer continues today with the Marina Theatre who provide an extensive programme of live entertainment.

On the edge of town there are a wide range of attractions to enjoy and experience which include Pleasurewood Hills and Africa-Alive.
