About Madeleine and Laurence:
Madeleine was born in Chingford, Essex and moved to South Africa with her parents at the age of 9. Madeleine has had a life-long interest in the English language and in Drama. She graduated in English and Speech & Drama at the University of Natal, Durban, South Africa. This was followed by achieving a Licentiate teaching diploma at Trinity College, London in Drama and Practical Speech.
In 2007 she obtained an intensive TEFL qualification with Inlingua Cape Town where she taught full-time for 8 years. When this school closed down, Madeleine joined the teaching staff of International House, Cape Town, and she continues to work there part-time. She teaches all levels of General English from beginners to advanced, including Business English, and with particular focus on FCE, CAE, IELTS and TOEFL examinations.
Born and educated in Rochester, Kent, Laurence spent many years in the information systems industry within major corporate environments, both in the UK and South Africa. As a senior IT consultant in Johannesburg, he prepared many project specifications and IT systems documents for the engineering and insurance sectors.
In the mid-1970’s, Laurence completed a 4-year degree course in musicology, and music remains one of his main interests.
In 1995, he took up a position as a lecturer in computer studies in East London, South Africa, retiring from that position in 2005.
During a 1-year stay in England, Laurence qualified as a proofreader in 2006. Having moved with his wife Madeleine to Cape Town in 2006, he qualified as a TEFL teacher, followed by a diploma in teaching business English from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
His students have included many professional people, notably from Germany, Switzerland, Taiwan and Japan. Laurence learnt German and French at school in England, and he still enjoys speaking these languages.
Laurence and Madeleine have two married daughters, both born in Johannesburg. The elder daughter lives in Cape Town, and is a qualified industrial psychologist with her own practice. Their other daughter lives in Bristol and is the director of a company specializing in Occupational Therapy case management.
